I took a "field trip" through the slums of Peoria (Illnois) - "down the hill" as we said at my university. In addition to seeing things that helped devop my "wabi-sabi" aesthetic, I found a lovely piece of discarded wood in the middle of a street. I took back to campus with me and began carving verious shapes into it. I was going off of the interesting wood grain, but was also reflecting on the "boxed in" nature of poverty and ghettos - hence the title.

the gradation of ink in this is just great :)

The message I get from this piece is that even rugged and distressed can be beautiful. :)
Both runs of the reduction were gradations - I remember how much that upset my professor that year. I was a little obsessed with the color blending - As you've seen in just about every relief print in my gallery - but I think I used it well.
Indeed - like a worn antique or artifact, or the oxidation on a copper roof. Beauty is so much more than the highly polished. It is the same reason many cultures value their elders. If you have time, look up these Japanese tenets. Should be easily found through a keyword search on Google:
- Wabi
- Sabi
- Suki
deffinately! but it sure has paid off
